Dragoncon 2011 Photos

back to Craig Steffen's blog

Here are some highlight photos that I took at Dragoncon 2011. This is, I think, my fourth time goin since we started going in 2007. All of these photos were taken with my Droid X built-in phone.

One thing I noticed this year that I hadn't so much before is this: people taking a specific point to pose with kids. Here a couple of young boys pose with Spiderman and Iron Man.

A closer shot of the guy in the Iron Man armor. It was really quite well done, with a lot of articulated pieces.

A fully-body Yoshi costume.

This sort of side room was off the mall food court. The sign at the right says that this is "overflow" seating. I found this terribly funny, as this room holds maybe 100 people, but the food court immediately behind me was packed with thousands of poeple, to the point that the air-conditioning was overwhelmed. This is a finger in the dike.

This is still the first day and I was still fighting with being able to get the phone to take pictures quickly, so I didn't get this until he was aways away. The guy in green was dressed as a green plastic army guy. He's carrying that base that the army man stands on on his back. The green color is reqlly quite vivid, as you can see in the photo.

I went to the Back To The Future panel. Left to right is the moderator, Lea Thompson (played Lorraine), Christohpher Lloyd (Doc Brown) and James Tolkan (Mr. Strickland).

I snapped this one in the hallway. She's only wearing part of it, her parents are behind her carrying the rest. But this is really a terrifici articulated Optimus Prime.

This is a great group costume (Weird Science).

Another group costume, and cross-gender at that. Two women as Wayne and Garth.

Xena on the left and a sexy "Little Mermaid" on the right.

This was an impressive piece of work. The strips are electro-luminescent (like indiglo in a watch). She has a battery pack on her back that powers it. (From the new TRON movie.)

I chatted with this woman a bit. This isn't a specific fictional character, it's the traditional costume depiction of death in...Spain, maybe? Her makeup is amazingly intricate and carefully done, and that was after being around the con for a whole day.

Jereth from Labyrinth. This guy was great. He had the accent to match, too. It was totally accidental, but the flash glows in the globe and in his eyes really well in this shot.

At the Rifftrax panel; a wonderful Tom Servo.

Also at the Rifftrax panel; Tom Servo and Crow.

I ran across this girl dressed as Xena in the lobby of the Hyatt and asked her parents if I could take her picture. She took the sword and Chakram and did a really great "Ki yi yi yi" war cry. She was sooooo cute.

At the Carrie Fischer Q&A.

Again, a total accident because I'm taking this in the evening and trying not to be obnoxious with a flash, but the glow of the lightsaber in this one is really good.
